2013 1/24th Scale
British Open Championship
Round 2
April 13th & 14th
In which Graeme has a
Birthday party on Friday
Night and R81 goes
RED BULL!

Pre event;-  Friday afternoon saw a number of early arrivals at R81 and Graeme (celebrating his 25h year) had arranged a fun party race in the evening to warm up the track and party down to celebrate. The fun race consisted of the racers present + a bunch of Graeme’s friends, some of which had raced before and some who hadn’t. The cars were the fleet of R81 House cars. All “guests” were allowed practice, prior to qualifying, BSCRA racers entered qualifying cold!. The results almost speak for themselves! Needless to say a quantity of beer and other beverages +pizza were consumed during the event which for some, reflected on their performance!  A fun evening and a great start to a serious racing weekend!

party race.JPG house cars under.JPG the survivers!.JPG rb10.JPG pr2.JPG

And so to the serious stuff!  Saturday morning saw 18 racers keen to get on the the track and get to grips with Production 1/24 saloon.  The day kicked of with a mixed OG12 and Saloon open practice session, followed by Saloon only timed practice.

All cars were impounded at tech and we progressed through to qualifying (single fastest lap , 1 minute) with Graeme Stephenson taking TQ.  The race was 6 x 4 minute segments in 3 heats, win from any final. James took the win with Gavin Wills close behind in second place, followed by home racer Richy Kettleson in 3rd. A number of racers fell fowl of misfortune through the races despite fast qualifying times and the racing was fast and competitive.

Following on from the Saloon Production race it was time for Open G12 Practice and also the arrival of the RED BULL WINGS TEAM who popped in to refresh the racers, have a chat and hand out samples of the great new flavours of Red Bull to the competitors.  A very pleasant break in the proceedings.

Fully refreshed and practice over, all OG12 cars were inspected and impounded for qualifying . After qualifying the cars were secured for the Sunday morning race, allowing racers to concentrate on preparation and testing for Eurosport.

Sunday morning saw the arrival or Keith Charles, so after late comer’s practice and qualifying the cars were once more installed in Parc Ferme for the race. Again , the format was 6 x 4 minute segmented finals, win from any heat.

After the Eurosport warm-up the cars were inspected and impounded for qualifying. As with the other classes , qualifying was 1 minute fastest lap. TQ was James with a stunning 2.854.  With 14 racers for Eurosport, the heats ran a a 4 man in the C final and 5 man heats in the B & A finals. Win from any final.  As with all Eurosport races there was a “toll” for some racers, James included. Andy Brown-Searle qualified as 5th man in the A and made it to 4th place overall, the only “incident free” race of his weekend. The win was taken by Gavin Wills with stunning runs in all his segments, followed by Paul Shepherd in second and Richy Kettleson finishing in 3rd place with a great run from the B final.
